Research shows that cupping affects us mentally and emotionally
Linda MyrbergThere is documentation and research supporting that cupping can affect us mentally and emotionally, just like yin yoga, fascia release, and other somatic therapy forms. Here is a compilation of what is actually supported (both scientifically and within TCM/body-based therapies):
1. Fascia and emotional memory (“cellular memory”)
There is growing research showing that fascia is closely connected to the nervous system:
-
Fascia contains 10 times more nerve receptors than muscles.
-
These receptors communicate directly with the autonomic nervous system (stress, calm, fight/flight).
-
Studies show that fascia can store tension linked to emotional states, especially prolonged stress, trauma, and anxiety.
👉 When cupping lifts fascia, a strong neurosensory stimulus is created that "resets" the tissue in the same way as deep fascia release, yin yoga, or TRE.
2. Cupping & the parasympathetic nervous system
Several studies show that cupping activates:
-
the vagus nerve
-
the parasympathetic nervous system (“rest & digest”)
-
a decrease in cortisol (stress hormone)
-
an increase in endorphins and oxytocin
This is documented in both modern research and in the TCM field.
Result: 👉 calm, security, reduced anxiety, better sleep, mental clarity.
That's why many feel a mental and emotional release after cupping.
3. Pain, fascia & mental health
Pain and emotional states are linked through the nervous system's “sensitization”.
Studies show that:
when connective tissue becomes tight and inflamed → it affects mood, energy, and focus
-
releasing fascia (with cupping) → improves both physical and mental energy
This is exactly the same mechanism as in:
-
yin yoga
-
myofascial release
-
acupressure
-
breathwork
4. TCM documentation – emotional blockages & Qi
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it has been documented for over 2000 years that cupping:
-
releases Qi stagnation
-
releases emotional blockages
-
balances the emotional functions of the organs
-
liver → anger
-
lungs → grief
-
kidneys → fear
-
stomach → worry
-
heart → hyperactivity/anxiety
-
When stagnation in the fascia releases → emotional states often release at the same time.
This describes what many experience as:
👉 “I feel lighter”, “my anxiety released”, “I can breathe again”.
5. Somatic therapies: Fascia = layer of emotion
Newer somatic psychology and trauma research describe that the body stores:
-
microtraumas
-
stress
-
tension
-
unfinished emotional processes
...as “memory imprints” in connective tissue and muscles.
Cupping → lifts the tissue and provides a stimulus that can “release” these memories.
Exactly the same mechanism as in:
-
somatic experiencing
-
bodywork therapy
-
yin yoga’s long-hold stretching
-
breathwork release
